Cheap Offshore Company Formation

Cheap Offshore Company Formation

Here is an overview of the most popular offshore company jurisdictions:

·         British Virgin Islands
·         Panama
·         Hong Kong
·         Bahamas
·         Belize
·         Nevis

Motel Search

Factors to keep in mind when choosing a jurisdiction:

Perception of your Company Location

Though there are certain benefits to incorporate in small Caribbean countries or pacific island nations, do not underestimate the public perception of these places. If you want to make business with other international companies you might get a preoccupied opinion if your business is in a jurisdiction famous for tax fraud and maybe sub-legal activities.

Political and economical stability

As a lot of the popular offshore locations are in very small countries you have to keep an eye on the political and economical stability. Things tend to change fast. Especially if the economy is very dependent on a specific sector, like in most island nations.

Costs

You also have to factor in the costs for incorporation, audit requirements, virtual office, annual fees which can vary quite a lot.

Privacy

If you want to stay below the radar and do not want anybody to know who is director or shareholder of your company, you limit your options to a few jurisdictions. Panama might be worth a look.

Tax

As you probably want to build a profitable business, you must check the tax situation of the place where you want to incorporate. Usually you want to have a place which is a tax haven.

Easiness of Incorporation

A factor often underestimated is the easiness of incorporation. Some governments are just very inefficient in their procedures which will cost your time, your nerves and ultimately your money.

Though there is no best jurisdiction which fits for everybody. If privacy is an issue, you chould check out Panama which offers cheap and convenient incorporation. If you want to do business in Asia, especially China, you should consider Hong Kong. Hong Kong allows cheap incorporation as well.

Thinking of Investing in a Hotel?

Thinking of Investing in a Hotel?

There are many excellent investments in the area of commercial real estate. At no particular time, many successful real estate investors consider adding a hotel to their commercial real estate portfolios. As in most commercial real estate investments, owner involvement is limited after acquisition to being a landlord and usually that is through a property management company.

Hotels are different from other commercial real estate investments in that they are a special blend of investment in a business and in real estate. A Hotel owner acquires not only a income producing property but also any businesses that are situated on the property. The businesses on this type of property operate largely on their own but the new investor may opt for other methods to imprve cash flow if necessary. Although a hotel may already have professional management in place, owners should be prepared to address the operational details or future improvements of their investment.

Hotel Operations

A hotel owner needs to choose whether to operate the hotel independently or contract with a professional management company. Hiring a management company can remove much of the daily burden from the owner.

In majority of commercial property management contracts, operational expenses are paid by the tenants. In this industry, most operational expenses are paid by the owner. The owner of a hotel property must decide whether to operate independently or affiliate with a franchisor. The most common way to operate a hotel is as a franchise. The major reasons for franchise affiliation are brand name recognition, advertising and possibly the most important, a franchisee has access to the franchises national or international reservation system.

You are now an Employer

A hotel owner/operator becomes an employer, subject to complex federal and state laws regulating and governing employment issues.

Food and Beverage license

Many hotel properties rely on the significant share of profits generated by food and beverage service.

In summary, hotels are a commercial real estate investment as well as a real business. Investors, even those with years of experience in commercial real estate, should consult with knowledgeable professionals before committing to purchasing a hotel.

"...I just know we're all we've got..." Finally managed to finish a vid to one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. I love the Winchesters, and hope this vid did them at least SOME justice. It's pretty random, and in absolutely NO order, but I kinda like it anyway. Hope you do too. It's basically about their never-ending fear of losing one another. Of Sam's fear of losing Dean to his deal, and Dean's fear of losing Sam to the darkness. This song is one of my all-time favs. (PS, it's "Fear" by Sarah McLachlan, so please don't ask me). This vid is for my sister. The Sam to my Dean, and one of the very few people on this earth who also thinks it's cool to take her antique truck across country like the SPN boys while staying in cheap motels and wearing SPN necklaces that we refuse to take off. Love you Bess. Sorry this vid took so long, haha. Tenesha and Heathyr... you got em coming. Checklist For a Road Trip - Get Ready to Hit the Road!

This checklist for a road trip will make sure that nothing important has been forgotten when you're finally ready to jump in your car or RV and go. Most people think about what they need to pack, but there's so much more you need to do when preparing for a road trip.

The items on this checklist for a road trip have been placed in the order that they need to be attended to - so don't jump ahead!Select your road trip companions first - if you're going with your family or significant other, you can jump ahead to step 2. If you're selecting friends to take on your road trip, make sure you're truly compatible. That person that's fun to hang out with in a bar or go out with for the occasional coffee may not be someone you can handle on a 24-hour basis. Add all that time together to the close proximity you'll share during the ride, and tensions may mount. How do you know that they're the right person to bring? You want someone who generally shares your interests and attitudes, who is as much like you as possible or is complimentary, and someone who rarely (if ever) ticks you off. Watch out for any annoying habits or personal grooming issues - they will really get to you on a road trip. The next item on this checklist for a road trip is to select a destination that the entire group is excited about. It's not good enough for just one person or half of your group to be enthusiastic about where you're going. A road trip is often a week or more, and part of what keeps you going every day is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow: your destination. You don't want some people in your group thinking that pot of gold is really just a pot of cheap gold-painted plastic coins. Map your road trip so that your route to your destination and your return route are different. This will make both journeys more interesting and give you more opportunities to see interesting sights, stay at different hotels, and eat at different restaurants - jazzing up your road trip considerably. Plan your route to hit sights, towns, cities, and various attractions along the way. A road trip is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. If you don't care about the journey, take a plane! Make your hotel/motel or campground reservations and print out all reservation information to have on hand in case there is a mix-up. Doing this has saved me many times when mistakes were made on the hotel's end - sometimes I even got an upgrade and some complimentary wine or a fruit basket for my troubles! If I hadn't had the printed reservation, I would have had to find other accommodations (and when you're in a popular area - that can often mean no accommodations). Pack your maps, any printed directions, and any reservation confirmations in a waterproof zippered bag that you'll keep in the car for reference. The waterproof and zipper part will come in very handy when you accidentally spill that soda or there's a downpour of rain when you're carrying it to and from the car. Get your car checked out and have any necessary maintenance work done. I recommend getting an oil change unless you just got one - better safe than sorry. Check the condition of your tires and replace them if they're worn. If you don't have AAA, consider getting it for not only the benefit of roadside assistance, but also the discounts most hotels offer to AAA members. Get both a roadside emergency kit and a first aid kit and put them in your trunk. Make sure the spare tire is in good shape. Arrange for your pets and plants - either boarding the pets or having someone stop in at your home to take care of everything. Have all mail and newspapers held or have a friend or neighbor take them in daily. Even if you don't have plants or pets, ask a friendly neighbor to keep an eye on your home. Let them know the exact length of your trip and also let them know that if they see a moving van in front of your house, call the police! I've heard too many stories of neighbors seeing a moving truck or van and thinking that it had something to do with the trip their neighbors were taking. Get an extra refill of any prescriptions if possible - it's good to have more than you need in case your trip runs longer for some unforeseen reason. Check with your cell-phone provider to make sure you'll have coverage where you're going and what the roaming fees are. You might want to check if your traveling companions have different calling plans and see if they are complimentary (they have coverage where you don't and vice-versa). Get or rent a roof-top cargo carrier if your car is too small for all of your stuff. Now that you've completed everything on this checklist for a road trip, you're ready to get packing!

Ecuador: One Month, $1000 Including Airfare

On my first trip to Ecuador I discovered that the official currency of is the U.S. Dollar. A nice surprize, since I thought I'd have to find a place to exchange money at midnight in Quito. Not only could I use the dollar bills in my pocket, but just one of them would buy a three-course lunch at a clean restaurant. I fell in love with Ecuador immediately. I fell in love with my wife Ana a few days later.

Quito, Ecuador

Motel Booking

I loved Quito, the capital of Ecuador. Centro Del Mundo, the hostel where I stayed the first few days, cost per night, including breakfast. The walls had maps and all the information I needed on them. There were travelers from fourteen countries there during my stay.

Ecuador: One Month, 00 Including Airfare

I took a tour to the volcano Cotapaxi, and hiked up to the glaciers with three others, from Israel, France and England. I danced (Free Rum in the hostel on Friday nights), wandered the city streets, and took spanish lessons from a beautiful tutor. Ana was not only a great teacher, but soon became my tour guide and, eventually, my wife.

Motel Booking

Riobamba, Ecuador

Riobamba is another beautiful mountain city. My hotel was per night, this time in a private room with a TV. The manager had connections, and information on anything I wanted. He arranged for a guide to take me up Mount Chimborazo, which at 20,600 feet is the furthest point from the center of the Earth (due to the bulge at the equator). After climbing 4,000 feet of glaciers, I made it to the summit.

Banos, Ecuador

Back in Quito, I called Ana, and we made plans to go to Banos De Santa Agua, a town in central Ecuador, famous for its hotsprings. The bus was , a nice motel with cable T.V. cost per night. The second day there, we ate out for breakfast, lunch and dinner, went to the hotsprings, bought souvenirs, went to a movie, went out drinking and dancing - and the entire day, including motel, cost !

In fact, the entire trip, including airfare, the fee for the guide on Chimborazo, and everything else, cost 40. That was for four weeks. How I kept it so cheap is a subject for another article.

More Information on Ecuador

The mountain towns (Quito, Riobamba, Loja, Cuenca, Otavalo, Ibarra, Ambato, Latacunga) have wonderful climates. Highs are in the 60s to 70s fahrenheit year-round. Guayaquil and the coastal cities can be hot, but the temperature is moderated by the Humboldt Current, which brings cool water along the coast of South America.

If you like beaches, you have many options. In Salinas, for example, you can sit on a beautiful Pacific Ocean beach, while vendors bring you everything from beer to ice cream to chair rentals an music. For you can rent a jet ski and have some fun in the waves.

The Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador, and tour information is available in all major cities (It's cheaper to wait until you're in Ecuador to book a tour).

Good meals can still be had for under two dollars in most cities, if you eat where the locals do. Hotels in most cities start at around (less for a bed in a hostel). Cross-country travel by bus is cheaper and more comfortable than bus travel in the U.S.

The people of Ecuador are almost universally friendly, and speak one of the clearest, easiest to understand dialects of Spanish (A great place to learn). Ecuador is a safe, democratic republic, with a legal system similar to that of the U.S.

Hospitality Marketing: A Remedy to Problems of Hospitality Industry

This article will provide a brief overview about the concept of hospitality industry, the problems faced by this industry and importance of hospitality marketing to ensure customer satisfaction and business growth.

Hospitality industry has a long evolutionary history. In older times, analysts suggest that the concept of this industry was initially known with a synonym, hotel industry. However in modern era the terminology of 'Hospitality Industry' is more common that comprises those businesses that provide services such as accommodation, food, and beverages to travelers seeking pleasure as well as those who travel due to business reasons (Gray & Liguori, 1996). Moreover it is argued that to some extend components of leisure industry such as cruise ships restaurants and to some lesser degree airlines are also considered part of hospitality industry as well (Papers4you.com, 2006).

Motel Reservation

Though the industry is assumed to be in nevr lasting demand but there are certain problems that this industry regularly faces. These problems may include uncertainty to the costs of even most economic source of energy, increased trend of problems in maintaining profitable food and beverage facilities, comparatively more increase in labor costs as compared to productivity, customer dissatisfaction due to increase in size and number of rooms as it is claimed to increase registration and other services process time and more importantly very high competition that induces heavy rate cuts to survive (Gray & Liguori, 1996).

Hospitality Marketing: A Remedy to Problems of Hospitality Industry

Keeping these factors in view, in particular customer's dissatisfaction and profit reduction, Lewis & Chambers (1989) asserts that hospitality industry historically did not realize importance of marketing and a remedy to industry's problem is encapsulated in 'hospitality marketing', both in its foundation and practices. It was further asserted that in 1950s and 1960s, industry focused on technology and updating their telephone reservation systems. Similarly in 1970s and later, businesses were focused to increase assets and forgot the essence of industry, that is, 'customer oriented service'.

Motel Reservation

It was suggested that players in hospitality industry should realize that hospitality product is different, that is in fact, something intangible that they are selling and as both product and reasons for buying it are different also different so it demands a different marketing strategy, something like hospitality marketing that requires customer centered hospitality need identification, specific segmentation & positioning and 'the hospitality marketing mix'.

Such trend can be observed around the world (Papers4you.com, 2006). Food chains like McDonalds, Pizza Hut etc are now focusing on customer's service and taste rather than focusing on their own brand name only. McDonalds in India, for instance, operates differently while focusing on the 'vegetarian aspect' of their tradition than McDonalds in USA where focus is more towards an easy accessible food facility.

Hence the discussion may conclude that hospitality industry provided ever needed services. Nonetheless it may face certain specific issues that can be counterattacked through industry specific 'hospitality marketing'

Bats in Attic - Your Home is Not a Bat Motel

While it might initially seem like a good idea to just leave the bats alone when they have taken over your attic space, you shouldn't fall victim to this very bad idea. If there are bats in attic spaces, they need to be removed for the safety and health of your family. No matter how many bats there are or how long they have been there, getting rid of them should be your first priority. Otherwise, you'll compromise the health and safety of your family, which is something that you should never do.

Bats in attic spaces don't know any better. They simply seek out warm dry places to nest, and your attic has some prime real estate in their world. However, your attic is not a bat motel, and you need to make sure that they know this. Don't attempt to tell them yourself, because this can be dangerous and a waste of money. If you find bats in your attic, you need to call a pest control service or wildlife specialist right away to have the problem resolved.

Motel Finder

You might be wondering about all those home remedies and do-it-yourself products that you see for taking care of bats in attic spaces. Truth be told, very few of them are actually effective and will only cause you to waste a lot of money that you don't need to waste. If you take the money that you would have spent on those products and attempted solutions and invest in bat control services the first time around, you will have a much more successful bat removal experience. After all, these companies are professionally trained, and it is their job to protect you and your family from bat infestations.

Bats in Attic - Your Home is Not a Bat Motel

A bat inspection and evaluation is usually free from most companies, which is a nice bonus. You can call just about any bat removal service and have them come out and discuss your bat removal options with you. Some might have better plans than others, but overall the process will involve removing the bats and getting them back outside of your home, and then sealing up your home so that they can't get back in. The technical name for this process is bat removal and bat exclusion, and it is a very effective solution for bats in attic spaces.

Visiting Lake Chelan, Washington

Visiting Lake Chelan, Washington

If you're looking for a great destination to travel to, don't overlook beautiful Lake Chelan in North Central Washington State. Lake Chelan is a gorgeous 55-mile long lake that cuts into the beautiful North Cascade Mountains. Fishing, boating, and water sports of all sorts are plentiful on Lake Chelan as is sunbathing on the shores during the hotter summer months. If outdoor recreation is an interest of yours then Lake Chelan a great place to go.

At the lower end sit the towns of Chelan and Manson; these communities combine the aspects of a resort town with the charm of a simple small village. You'll find few chain restaurants and motels in Chelan, meaning you'll have to "settle" for superior cooked meals from locally owned establishments. Many condos and motels overlook the famous lake, but summer reservations better be made early. A popular tourist site for young and old alike, Chelan is surrounded by apple orchards like much of the North Central Washington region. During the harvest months fresh fruit is both plentiful and delicious thanks to roadside fruit stands that seem to appear out of nowhere. For the youngsters, there is miniature golf, bowling, a petting zoo, and a waterslide park. There is also the option of casino-like entertainment from the Casino in Manson.

Motel Search

The lake is divided into the upper and lower basin. The lower basin is home to most of the recreational boaters and jet skiing enthusiasts and the upper lake is mainly used as a waterway to get to some of the numerous boat-in-only or hike-in-only campgrounds that dot the shoreline. Imagine your peaceful camping trip taking place at a campground that only boaters and accomplished hikers could get to.

At the upper end of Lake Chelan sits the remote village of Stehekin. The Stehekin area itself has about 20-30 miles of roadway but none of them connect to the outside world. That's right; the only way to make a much needed visit to Stehekin is by boat, floatplane, or hiking in on forest trails. Stehekin has one calling card operated phone and not much else for modern luxuries. There are approximately 75 year-round residents made up of retirees, forest service workers, teachers in the one-room schoolhouse, and small business owners. The most convenient way to get to Stehekin is by boat. Daily boat trips are run from Chelan, 55 miles down lake, to Stehekin and passage can be booked there at the boat company (this is also how the Stehekin residents get their groceries and other living necessities). This boat service also stops at other points on the lake like the small community of Holden Village and the occasional trailhead. Once in Stehekin you can choose to spend the night in the rustic inn or camp in any of the local camp sites. Within a short drive/hike is Rainbow falls that, though an awesome sight at any time of year, is truly majestic in the spring and early summer. There is far more to explore in this rustic little hamlet cut off from the world, enough for the outdoor enthusiast and the history lover alike.

Hiking trails head off in many many directions from the shores of Lake Chelan allowing thorough exploration of the beautiful North Central Washington area. Chelan itself boasts a number of golf courses and wineries so there is enough to keep the adults occupied as well. When the winter hits, the recreation doesn't stop as the skiers, snowboarding, and snowmobiling take over.

Beautiful Lake Chelan in North Central Washington has no problem year in and year out entertaining many wonderful visitors. There is so many events and activities offered by, not only this town, but the entire North Central Washingon area that it would be a shame for the entire family to miss out on such great memories.

San Francisco on the Cheap

San Francisco on the Cheap

If you've ever visited San Francisco, you know it can be a very expensive city. Hotel costs, restaurant tabs, valet fees and cab fares can add up quite quickly. But, if you know where the values are, that trip to San Francisco can actually fit into your budget quite nicely.

First, let's start with lodging. Yes, it's nice to stay at the Grand Hyatt on Union Square or the Mark Hopkins. But, let's face it, they're expensive. For budget considerations, I suggest you consider Lombard Street. No, not the crooked part of Lombard Street, but the section of Lombard Street which runs through the Cow Hollow and Marina districts in the northern part of San Francisco, near the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Motels

You can find a nice room on Lombard Street for just under 0 a night, which is a far cry from the hotels on Union Square. But, what kind of room will your 0 get you? Of course, you're not going to get the luxury of a fancy hotel, but you're not paying for luxury. You're paying to enjoy San Francisco. Your 0 will buy you a comfortable, clean room. Also, you will generally receive free parking. If you drive to San Francisco or rent a car in San Francisco, free parking is a big deal. The luxury hotels usually charge for parking, as well as a in & out fees when you retrieve your car for a day trip or night out.

Lombard Street is also a great location. Just north of Lombard Street is Chestnut Street, with a movie theater, shops and wonderful food. To the south a few blocks you'll find Union Street, with upscale shops and, again, wonderful food. Lombard Street is also a good location for bus service to all parts of San Francisco, eliminating the need for expensive taxi rides.

You have numerous choices for lodging along Lombard Street. I've stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn (415-921-5800) and find it to be good, inexpensive choice, with free parking, with a nice, inexpensive Italian restaurant located just north on Steiner Street (Ristorante Parma). One caveat I have about Cow Hollow, which can probably be applied to any of the motels on Lombard Street, is that you will probably want to request an inside room off the main streets, as they can get quite loud. Another motel you might consider would be La Luna Inn (415-346-4664), a recently renovated inn with some luxuries you wouldn't expect from a budget motel, such as pillow-top mattresses, flat screen TVs, wireless internet access and complimentary muffins, breads, coffee, tea and juices served every morning. All that for just under 0 per night for a single king or queen bed.

Restaurants can also add up to the cost of a vacation. San Francisco has a large amount of wonderful restaurants at inexpensive prices. Of course, you have to know which ones they are. Those would usually be the ones the locals frequent, so if you want to avoid over-priced restaurants, you'd stay away from restaurants in tourist traps like Fisherman's Wharf and go for neighborhood restaurants, such as those found in Cow Hollow and the Marina District, 24th Street in Noe Valley, or Potrero Hill. One very inexpensive restaurant I'd recommend in Potrero Hill is San Francisco Bar B Que, 1328 18th St., a wonderful little Thai BBQ restaurant that serves great food at cheap prices. If there's a wait, just put your name on the list and bop into Bloom's Saloon a couple doors down for a drink and great views of the downtown skyline.

As for inexpensive things to do in San Francisco, check out the free walking tours offered by San Francisco City Guides, a non-profit organization of more than 200 trained volunteers who lead free walking tours in San Francisco. Their website at sfcityguides.org lists all the many different walking tours of such sites as Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and even ghost walks of supposedly haunted locations.

San Francisco is truly a great city to visit. It's even better when you know you can visit and experience all the city has to offer without breaking the bank.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Dry Camping

One of the key advantages of RV travel is that all it takes to technically start camping is to throw the motorhome or tow vehicle into "Park." With most vehicles being highly self-sufficient - even away from the power grid and water hookups of your average campground - any stretch of land can become an impromptu campsite for the night. A secluded spot next to a stream. An empty field or a deserted parking lot. Yes, even Aunt Edna's driveway, if you're so inclined.

Such features as an onboard generator and/or inverter, LP tank(s), fresh water supply, and holding tanks make such a reality possible. That is, assuming you know what you're doing. Surely, the temptation to dry camp or boondock, where travelers camp in one way or another away from standard campsites and hookups, appeals to the gypsy spirit in many of us at some point and time. And there are other reasons, too.

Motel Reservation

Me, Myself, and I
A sense of community is always nice, but sometimes being thrown into the mix at the local campground isn't exactly what you're looking for. Larger campgrounds may swell to thousands of campers on a busy weekend; poorly laid out parks stack RVs one right on top of each other. Where did all these people come from? While no one can deny the benefits of full hookups, hot showers, game room, and mini-mart, frankly, established campgrounds are not for everybody. Even the five-star RV resorts that do everything from back in your RV to massage your feet might sometimes miss the point. You want to get away from it all, and that means blazing your own trail. Setting up the travel trailer at the secluded fishing hole. Maneuvering the motorhome through the deepest reaches of the dense forest until you find the perfect spot. Ah, now that's more like it. No sounds of idling diesels next-door, no kids playing Frisbee through your campsite. Just you, your crew, and nature. Isn't this the way it was supposed to be?

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Dry Camping

Location, Location, Location
An RV trip isn't always to popular destinations, where campsites are plentiful. Some folks, who take the second-home concept seriously, choose to set up their rig for an extended stay in a place where an established campground might not be found. For example, that fold-down camper of yours might work admirably in grandma's backyard during your lengthy visit. Best of all, the grandkids are nice and close. Or perhaps it's the part-time job that's got you working at the Christmas tree lot, volunteering at that State Park, or selling your wares at a regional art show that requires on-site living sans hookups? Patient's families have been known to "camp out" at the hospital, in order to be close to a loved one during a time of crisis. Furthermore, those whose hobbies take them far off the highways - such as motor sports enthusiasts, rock climbers, or boaters - often won't find better nightly accommodations than their RVs. Different situations call for different accommodations, and your RV is ready for any of it.

Motel Reservation

Drastic Times Call for...
The couple was absolutely dumbfounded by the no vacancy signs up and down Pennsylvania's Interstate-80. They looked everywhere, by the end of the night just hoping for any campsite, anywhere. Unfortunately, it was fall foliage season and every single place was booked. Sound familiar? It's getting late and everyone's exhausted? Somebody forgot to make the reservations and things are looking a little grim. Any RV maverick who heads for a prime tourist spot in-season knows full well how quickly campgrounds can fill up, often forcing a decision of where to beach the rig for the night. Truth is, sometimes boondocking is a necessity - even if you don't particularly like the idea of bunking down in a Wal-Mart parking lot or deserted field. If you're not going to be a stickler about making reservations, it's best to work out dry camping skills in advance - before you have to use them.

Money Woes
Compared to even a moderately priced motel, most RV parks, campgrounds - even plush RV resorts - are terrific deals. A night spent at a state or national park is cheaper still, bolstered by the kinds of bedazzling views one won't find just any old place. However, there are those of the RVing sect who say hooey to the whole notion of paying to camp. After all, they already ponied up 0,000 for the motorhome, which is the premier full-time camping machine. By their thinking, every night spent parked in the woods or at a friend's house or catching zzz's at the truck stop is money in the bank. Of course, campground owners don't much like this free-wheelin' philosophy, but you can't beat the price of a night of dry camping.

The Can-Do Spirit
Many RVers started as tent campers, so we're used to the idea of roughin' it. And just because we made the transformation from soggy sleeping bag to comfy digs doesn't mean we no longer embrace - or at least pine for - the pioneering spirit. Many of us still cuddle our inner explorer and we get a thunderous sense of pride from camping out where few motorhome tires have tread before. We're talking about a spot so rustic that not even the pricey satellite dish works. Generating your own power, carrying your own water, feasting on fresh trout or a pantry full of canned goods is a sure-fire way to restore one's swagger - regardless if it's in a ,000 truck camper or 0,000 diesel-pusher. Free camping can be found throughout many of the million acres governed of the Bureau of Land Management and National Wildlife Refugees.

Before You Go...
However, contrary to popular belief, the world is not your oyster. One cannot simply park their vehicle anywhere they please and throw out the welcome mat. There are laws to consider, etiquette to follow, and safety concerns to factor. Furthermore, different RVs offer different capabilities as far as boondocking is concerned. Many smaller towables lack the ability to generate their own power, lacking an onboard generator, inverter, or even solar power applications. Smaller fresh water tanks will limit the duration of the trip - and length of shower, for that matter - of any off-roading adventure. Is your RV up to the challenge? Are you? Here's a few things to consider before camping without a net.

Safety First
The problem with camping in Parts Unknown is just that - you just don't know. Is it safe or not? While every campground isn't necessarily Fort Knox, the reputable ones are well-lit, fenced-in, and offer the safety-in-numbers reassurance you won't get bunking at the truck stop or deepest, darkest woods. For me, every snap of a tree branch sends me into a deep, paranoid panic when parked in isolation. For others, it's all part of the natural experience. Still, one must never compromise the safety factor. If it's just a matter of spending the night before moving on in the morning, gravitate towards spots that are well-lit, fairly busy, and ideally located near the communal bond of another RV or two. Parked under a streetlight might not make for the best night's sleep you've ever had, but it does provide some assurances of safety. Moreover, make sure doors and windows are locked, possession brought inside for the night, and you know where the keys are in the case of a much-needed quick getaway. That, and a Louisville Slugger in case things ever get, ahem, interesting.

Legal Matters
While Wal-Mart has made it well-known how much they just love harboring RVers for the night, many potential landlords aren't so giving. Nor are some towns, which feel squatters may not be the best thing for the community - or the local businesses that profit from overnight guests. The fact is the land you're looking to camp on - be it in the back of a mall lot or next to a woodland stream - belongs to somebody. And that somebody probably isn't you. At the very least, one should always try to get the owner's okay before activating the slide-out and sending up the TV antennae for the big game. Otherwise, that tapping you hear on the side of the window at 4 a.m. might just be Officer Friendly looking to point you back on the highway. As a rule of etiquette, it's always nice to support a business that has allowed you to camp over for the night.

Is Your Rig Worthy?
The axiom is painful yet true: The smaller the RV, the less stuff it's got. Smaller fresh water tanks mean less aqua for drinking and washing, while miniscule holding tanks dictate fewer days spent in the wild before needing to purge. Keep this in mind before scheduling a two-week odyssey far away from civilization. As we mentioned, your vehicle may or may not have means to create electricity onboard, forcing owners to invest in a portable generator or inverter to do the work. On the flip side, a smaller unit is better when it comes to maneuvering you and your crew to more reclusive places. A camper van or truck camper is a superior off-road machine, capable of squeezing through the tight passages that a 40' motorhome or 60' worth of trailer and tow vehicle can only dream about. In short, don't write checks your RV can't cash. Know and respect your RV's limits, and plan accordingly. Moreover, what is the condition of the RV? Is everything working okay? Better be sure before you find yourself 20 miles away from a paved road with a flat tire or a dead battery. As you would before any trip, fully inspect the unit and stay on top of any preventative maintenance and routine service.

Ready, Set, Camp
Even if you never intend to spend one single, solitary moment camping away from full hookups and the predictable fun of a campground, it's still a good idea to at least know how what your RV is capable of - just in case. The best advice is to test your dry-camping skills in a safe environment. The smartest way is to get a no-hookup campsite (or get full hookups and don't use them the first night or two) to see how you do. Or just try things out in the driveway. You'll learn all-too-quickly you and your RV's learning curve. How fast does your family go through water? How much LP do you need for a weekend or more? How adept are you at cooking over a campfire if the LP gas runs out? How much can your generator handle at one time - or how good are you at conserving electricity? Ah, yes, conservation, the backbone of the dry camping experience. Here's some ways to get the most out of less.

Restore Power
If you run out of electricity, you run out of a lot. Fortunately, there are ways to keep that from happening, namely through the use of a generator or inverter to keep the batteries surging. Portable models aren't cheap, but are available to prolong your stays in the great outdoors. Otherwise, you'll need to adopt a highly disciplined approach to squeeze every bit of juice out of your batteries. Turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances when not in use. A few guilty parities are the water pump, electric step, or exterior lights, which all subtly eat up the amps. Forgo the blow dryer and air conditioner, which are big electricity-users. Park in the shade, on hot days, to keep the refrigerator from overworking, but still keeping things cool onboard. Don't keep playing with the slide-outs or spend the whole afternoon watching TV. Keep an eye on that monitor panel. You don't want the batteries to drain to zero. Remember: In a pinch, a decent-length drive can partially recharge your coach battery when readings begin to wane.

Water World
Not everyone has a 100-gallon water tank. For everyone who doesn't, it's time to conserve, considering that water is critical for cooking, cleaning, and hydrating the crew. How else are you going to make Kool-Aid? Thankfully, fresh water is pretty easy to maintain and re-supply if you should run out (Quick Mart, anyone?) Still, shorter showers (remember the in-and-out style of the "Navy" shower) and minimizing hand washing (use hand sanitizers when possible) should maintain water levels. Don't leave the water on when brushing teeth or washing dishes, either. If there are facilities nearby for showering and such, use them. And just think - the less water you use, the less goes into the holding tanks. It's a win-win. A final thought: Just because no one may be able to see you doesn't give you the right to dump the tanks during your boondocking adventures. We're on our best behavior, right? Fifty gallons worth of spewing gray and black water is no way to repay someone for using his or her property.

Pro-Propane
LP gas is a pretty hardy resource, meaning it's tough to run out if you have any decent-size tanks. However, our conservative approach should still be employed here as well. The best way to stretch the propane supply is to cook outdoors. A campfire is still the most fun and flavorful way to prepare a meal, a method that simply can't be replicated in the RV's oven no matter how you try. Snuffing out pilot light's when not in use will stretch your supply even further. Otherwise, go easy on the furnace and water heater.

Provisions
Overloading the RV is a bad thing. Running out of Mac N' Cheese 30 miles from the nearest town isn't too good, either. Dry-campers must walk the line between loading up and overloading, which is hopefully something that comes with experience. Spare canned goods, firewood, and portable cooking devices can go a long way when roughin' it - provided they don't tilt your vehicle into the overweight condition. If boondocking plans simply call for a night here and a night there, you probably won't run out of food or supplies. However, if the campout is of the epic variety, be realistic about how much of everything you might need and how easy it will be to get more. Bring extra food and water, if need be, since a hungry group quickly falls into mutiny mode. A few other possible items to include: portable grill/cooking grate, charcoal, fishing poles and tackle box, extra blankets, alkaline batteries, cell phone, first aid kit, tool kits, hatchet/saw, manual can opener, cooking tools, and bug spray. And don't head into the woods with the fuel tank on "E." Chances are your generator will munch on some of the fuel and dry camping is no time to run out of gas.

Selecting Your Lodging For the Indy 500

SELECTING YOUR LODGING: There are many options for lodging when you come to Indianapolis. Besides hotels and motels, there are campgrounds, temporary campsites, and friends or family, if you're lucky to have some who live nearby.. But for our purposes, we are going to focus on hotels/motels primarily with a short discussion about camping at the end.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway sits within the beltway of Indianapolis. Interstate 465, which circles Indianapolis, has downtown located slightly south of center. The IMS would be very close to 9:00 o'clock, if you viewed the beltway like a clock from above. The distance between the speedway and downtown Indianapolis is approximately 5 miles. The beltway that circles Indianapolis is approximately 60 miles in length. There are 25 interchanges on 465 and there are a number of motels located at or near most interchanges. Additionally, there are hotels and motels located downtown inside the beltway and there are hotels and motels located a few miles outside the beltway. With 400 thousand fans attending the Indy 500, hotels and motels do book out and for hotels near the speedway, rates are set at a premium.

Motel Search

We can't tell you the best place to stay, because the answer to that question depends upon a number of variables. Those variables include what you intend to do while you're here, what your transportation needs are, how long you intend to stay, and of course your budget. If you've got the entire month of May to spend here and money is no object, you might enjoy one of the five star hotels in downtown Indianapolis that will provide you shuttle service or limousine service to and from the track. If you have time or budget concerns, then you may opt for some other lodging. The following will provide you with a brief overview of the various hotel and motel options.

Selecting Your Lodging For the Indy 500

THE LAY OF THE LAND: For many, location is the most important consideration. Therefore, if you act quickly enough, you may be able to reserve a room near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that will enable you to reach the track with relative ease. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located in Speedway, a small town which is located within the city limits of Indianapolis. Searching for hotels and motels in the Speedway area will put you in close proximity to the track. It will also put you close to the Indianapolis International Airport, which is a approximately 5 miles southwest of the speedway.

Motel Search

If you're not staying in the Speedway area, you have a number of other areas around Indianapolis to consider. On the north side of Indy, running west to east, there is College Park, Carmel, Castleton and Fishers. These neighborhoods are highly developed and provide a heavy concentration of upscale restaurants, bars, and shopping. The east side of Indy includes the areas of Lawrence, and Greenfield. This area is less densely developed and its offerings of restaurants, bars and shopping is limited. The south side of Indy includes the areas of Beech Grove, Southport, and Greenwood. These areas are a bit dated, but offer a reasonable number of restaurants, bars and shopping. Downtown Indy has a number of first class hotel accommodations as well as a large number of upscale restaurants, bars and shopping.

Dividing the town into quadrants, west, north, east and south, each geographical area offers pluses and minuses. We'll treat downtown last.

WESTSIDE: The west side of Indianapolis has a number of positive attributes. Besides being close to the airport and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, there are numerous restaurants, bars, and entertainment options in the area. It is also easy to reach downtown Indianapolis as well as other areas of the city. The biggest drawbacks to this area is the current road construction on Interstate 465 and the fact that hotels and motels in this area are among the first to fill up for race weekend.

NORTHSIDE: The north side of Indianapolis is densely populated with upscale restaurants, pubs, clubs, shopping and entertainment options. These businesses cater to the more affluent Indianapolis neighborhoods and the options available in this commercial sector reflects that. Interstate 465, which is the primary interstate system serving to connect these north side neighborhoods with the speedway is currently under construction and may make travel between your hotel and the speedway challenging. Particularly, if you decide to stay in the Castleton and Fishers area.

EASTSIDE: The east side of Indianapolis does not offer as many options as the west side and north side when it comes to restaurants, pubs and shopping. This does not mean that it should be ignored as a lodging option. While it is on the opposite side of town from the speedway, Interstate I70 and I65 make it possible to drive straight through town and avoid the construction on I-465 on the north and west sides of town.

SOUTHSIDE: The south side of Indianapolis is half industrial and half residential. Beech Grove to the southeast and Southport and Greenwood, which is due south, are both friendly and accommodating with a good selection of moderate motel space. The southwest side of Indianapolis is very industrial and offers few options for lodging, dining or shopping. However, from Beech Grove, Southport, and Greenwood, you can reach the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by driving through town using I-65 and I-70 and avoid the road construction on the north and west legs of Interstate 465.

DOWNTOWN INDY: Indianapolis is a vibrant and growing city. Even in the midst of a recession, Indianapolis has managed to continue developing. There are numerous upscale hotels located downtown offering quick and easy access to the Circle Center Mall, trendy restaurants, pubs, clubs, and other entertainment options. From the heart of downtown Indy, you are a short 10 minute drive to the speedway.

Capsule Hotels in Japan

What is a capsule hotel? A capsule hotel can be described as a hotel system that provides densely populated accommodation which contains rooms of a relatively standardized size based on modular plastic or fibreglass sleeping quarters. Other than your own room, all other facilities are shared.

History

Motel Booking

Although they are quintessentially Japanese, the first capsule hotel was only built in 1979 by a chap in Osaka by the name of Kisho Kurokawa. The rates were a bit lower back then at about 1,600 yen. They are a uniquely Japanese phenomenon not only because of space restrictions but because Japan is still a relatively safe country and such a facility would be unthinkable in many other countries.

Capsule Hotels in Japan

It wasn't until 1985, when the Tsukuba Science Expo was held, that capsule hotels became well known in Japan. There wasn't enough room to accommodate everyone so the organisers decided to make capsule hotels so everyone could enjoy the expo and stay overnight. This became big news when reported on Japanese television, and since then capsule hotels have become part of the Japanese vocabulary. The first reported capsule hotel in Tokyo was Green Plaza Shinjuku, located in the red light district of Kabukicho. The Green Plaza is also the biggest one in Tokyo with 630 rooms.

How to use a capsule hotel

Most do not have a key to the room so you need to place your valuables in a separate locker. You have to share the bathroom, rest room and bath with everyone else (most capsule hotels have a sauna included). Most of the basics are provided and they have a communal bath which you share with other clientele. Many capsule hotels have a large bath called a 'Rotenburo' which means 'open air bath' where you can relax under the open sky. When you enter you have to take off your shoes, put them in a shoe locker and lock it with the key which is provided. You then give the shoe locker key to the reception staff and they provide you with another key for a small clothes locker. At this point they give you a description of how their system works.

There is usually a Yukata, bath towel and a small hand towel in the locker in which you place your belongings. After you do this you can then go to your room. You can watch a small television while lying down (usually around 8 inches). In fact, the capsule hotels are so compact that it is possible to operate the lights, air conditioning, TV, radio and Alarm Clock from the bed without having to move. One negative aspect of most are not sound proof, so it is possible to hear the person next to you snoring (earplugs are recommended). Most hotels have a two-tiered system so each room has two capsule rooms - one on top and one on the bottom. The people at the front tell you whether you are on the top or bottom one and you can access the top bunk rooms via the stairs provided. For those over about 190cm, you have to bend your legs slightly when you go to bed. For those who are a little overweight there usually isn't a problem with the width.

Location

They are mainly found in central city areas where it is common for people to miss the last train or bus. Nearly all capsule hotels are within walking distance of a station.

Reservations

Although many people use capsule hotels because they miss the last train home, it is possilbe to make reservations via the internet or by phone.

Conditions

Many of them only accept men, but there are some which are exclusive to women. In terms of time restrictions, most places have a check in time of 17:00 and check out time of 10:00am. Depending on the type of capsule hotel, you are required to return to the hotel by 02:00, but others are 24 hours. Although most require you to stay a night, there are some which allow you to use facilities for a shorter period of time if you just want to take a break. For example, at Capsule Inn Akihabara they allow you to take a shower for 500 yen or sleep/rest for 3 hours for 1,200 yen or 7 hours for 2,500 yen. Some places have restrictions on how many nights you can stay, so if you are looking to stay for a period of more than 2 nights you should check their conditions before booking.

Capsule Hotels are thought to be men only domains, but there are many places available where women can stay. Some are exclusive to women and some allow both men and women to stay in the same complex, although the accommodation areas and bathing are separated. At most of them, you can not take your own food or drink into and you must be over 18.

Recent trends

Although foreigners describe capsule hotels as 'Coffin hotels', in many cases this is an unfair description. Some of the more recent capsule hotels have internet access, a key for your room, private videos (such as Hotel Dandy in Ueno) and a private shower room. They also have cabin types which have a chair and table. More recently, double-bed capsule hotels have been introduced where you are allowed two people to a room. In many of the new establishments, on the top floor they have an open sauna (rotenburo) and a separate massage room. In particular, some of the women only capsule hotels are quite extravagant with high quality spas.

Alternative accommodation

If you are looking for something even cheaper  (although possibly not quite as comfortable), other alternatives are Kenkou (health) land or Manga Kissatens.

Hello From Niagara Falls - Experiencing the 7th Wonder of the World - Skylon Tower, IMAX Theatre

After a long and exciting day yesterday that included a helicopter sightseeing tour, some butterflies, and an amazing magic show, I woke up to a grey, cold and drizzly day. But that was not going to deter me from exploring the City of Niagara Falls in more detail. I got up, took a nice long shower and went downstairs for breakfast to the Windows on the Lane Restaurant which is a casual dining restaurant on the main floor of the Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel.

I then linked up with Lisa Smith, who works at the hotel, to get a tour of the facility. Lisa took me into the tropical courtyard that is the signature feature of the Cairn Croft Hotel and explained that the name of the hotel was derived from its original owners whose last name was Cairn, and from the word "croft", which is Scottish for "inn". Even today the hotel is still family owned and a friend of the owners hand-painted the faux-stone pattern on the walkways surrounding the tropical courtyward. Lisa pointed out that this property was the first Best Western hotel in Canada and has been extensively updated in recent years. The company Best Western Motels was founded back in 1946 which originally was an informal link between properties, where each hotel recommended other lodging establishments to travelers. As far back as 1962 the Best Western Hotel Chain had the only hospitality reservations system that covered all of the United States and Canada.

After a long history of company growth, Best Western today is the world's largest hotel chain in the world and comprises more than 4,000 hotels in nearly 80 countries. One of Best Western's unique marketing propositions is its free high-speed Wi-Fi access in all its hotels, a service that was rolled out across the entire chain in just eight months in 2004. From an organizational point of view, Best Western is also unique since it is not a traditional franchise operation. Best Western actually operates as a non-profit membership association, each property is individually owned and each franchisee acts and votes as a member of this association. Interestingly, hotels are allowed to retain their own identity and can keep their own independent name as part of this identity, as evidenced by the Best Western Cairn Croft name.

Lisa started giving me a tour through the tropical courtyard and explained that originally the building was a U-shaped motel with an outdoor courtyard. One of the improvements made to the property was the installation of a roof over the courtyard and the creation of a tropical environment, complete with a large heated indoor swimming pool, exotic trees and plants as well as a playground that makes the Cairn Croft a favourite destination for families with young children. The Bourbon Street Bistro overlooks the pool, serves cocktails, snacks and pizza and provides live entertainment on some weekends and holidays.

The family-feel of this property is also evidenced by the fact that many of the employees have been working here for a long time. Lisa mentioned that many of the staff have been here for 15 or even 20 years, somewhat of a rarity in the hospitality industry. Clients often become repeat customers and come back time and time again for a special weekend in Niagara Falls. The Croft Lounge is also a popular hangout on weekends and features karaoke, theme nights and dance music on the weekends.

The Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel has also become a popular destination for weddings, especially due to the tropical courtyard and the gazebo in the garden-like bistro that adjoin the pool. Lisa added that this property is particularly popular with same-sex couples who travel from the United States to Canada to get married. Most of her customers come from within a three hour radius and many of them are avid golfers who like to take advantage of the Niagara Peninsula's plentiful and affordable selection of golf courses.

After this overview it was now time for me to hit the road and start my busy schedule of discoveries in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I started my day with a visit to the Skylon Tower, Niagara Fall's most famous landmarks. Construction of the tower started in May of 1964 and 17 months later the tower was officially opened jointly by the then Governor of New York and the Premier of Ontario. I walked in on the main floor which houses some retail outlets and an arcade and took one of the "yellow bug" elevators to the top. As we moved up from the main level, the falls on both the American and the Canadian side came into view.

I went straight up to the top level which houses the observation deck. This indoor/outdoor observatory is the highest vantage point in Niagara Falls, and close to 8,000 square miles in Canada and the United States can be seen. Sights such as the skyline of Toronto and Buffalo are visible from the top and a circular walkway provides a 360 degree panoramic view. Signs at regular intervals identify the various sights surrounding the tower.

A souvenir shop is located in the central portion of this observation deck and through the glass doors you can reach the outside observation deck. I ventured outside where the wind was howling on this rather grey and chilly day. The view of the American and Canadian Falls as well as of Goat's Island and Niagara Falls, NY, was nevertheless breathtaking. Seeing the Falls from the air just provides a much better idea of the imposing size and beauty of this natural wonder.

When it got too chilly I hurried back inside and went a couple of stairs down to check out the Revolving Dining Room, which must be a wonderful restaurant in the evening, when the colourful lights and the illuminated cascades of Niagara Falls come to life.

I was to get much more intimate knowledge of Niagara Falls through my next visit: just minutes across the street from the Skylon Tower is the Niagara Falls Imax Theatre, a modern facility that features a truly spectacular IMAX presentation: "Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic". I always love IMAX presentations and was really looking forward to learning more about the unique historical background of Niagara Falls.

The movie started with the native legend of the Maid of the Mist, and featured a dramatization of the first sighting of Niagara Falls by European explorers in the 17th century. It also covered all sorts of stories of daredevils and high-wire performance artists that started to make Niagara Falls a tourism attraction from the early 19th century onwards. Even the story of Roger Woodward, the seven year old American boy who was swept over the Horseshoe Falls in a life jacket (the only survivor who went over the Falls without a protective vessel) was told in moving images.

Just outside the Imax Theatre's screening room is the Daredevil Gallery that features a number of the interesting and diverse vessels that were used by various daredevils to go over the Falls. One of the most famous was a 63-year old school Teacher named Annie Edson Tayler whose story was also told in the Imax movie. Joined by with her cat, she was the first person to go over the Falls for a publicity stunt, in a wooden barrel, cushioned by a big mattress. Unfortunately, her much hoped-for public speaking career never materialized and she died as a pauper.

Other daredevils went over the falls in metal barrels of all shapes and sizes, with varying results. Some arrived on the other side of the big cascade virtually unharmed, while others suffocated or died of internal injuries. It was indeed rather eerie to see some of the actual vessels that were used in unsuccessful attempts to go over the Falls. One of the most gruesome exhibits is the "George Stathakis Death Barrel" that was used in an unsuccessful attempt in 1930 when its passenger suffocated after being trapped in turbulent water behind the Falls for 22 hours. Today such daredevil stunts are actually outlawed and anyone ever attempting to go over the Niagara Falls would surely face hefty fines.

To continue with the Niagara Falls historic theme my next visit was to the "Skylon The Falls 3D/4D Movie", a movie theatre located at the base of the Skylon Tower that recounts the Niagara Falls story from a more fantasy-based angle. Special effects include gusts of air, sprays of water and moving seats that are intended to create a multi-sensory experience of the film.

It was time to continue my exploration of Niagara Falls, but I had to get closer. So I walked down Murray Street and turned right onto the Niagara Parkway, walking right next to the mighty Niagara River. The weather at this time was grey and chilly, and wet snow was falling. I was glad to take refuge in the Table Rock Centre, the shopping and restaurant complex right next to the edge of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls which was currently under renovation. Most of the souvenir shops and fast food outlets were open and I had a quick pizza and a charming conversation with five British ladies that were in Niagara Falls for a quick pre-Christmas getaway, their first time in Canada. They seemed to have a pretty jolly old time in Canada and took the clammy weather in strides - they were probably used to it.

Having satisfied my hunger I was ready to get truly up close and personal with the Falls: the "Journey behind the Falls" is one of the best ways to experience the true power of the Niagara Falls first-hand. I took the elevator down to the lower level at the Table Rock Centre and started my own journey behind the mighty Falls. Known until the early 1990s as the "Scenic Tunnels", this attraction consists of two tunnels and an outside viewing platform. The tunnels date back to early 20th century and extend about 46 m behind the waterfall. I walked down the long underground corridors with their orange lighting and stopped intermittently to read the informational posters on the wall. These displays provide a description of the history of Niagara Falls, its geology and some of the famous visitors who include President Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe, who were both here on separate occasions.

Towards the end of the tunnel there are two smaller side tunnels, each leading to an opening, or a portal, that provides a view from behind the waterfalls. One of these portals was partially covered by icicles and presented a perfect motif for any passionate photographer. Access to the portals was blocked by a metal barrier for safety reasons, although in the past visitors could get much closer to the edge and admire the tumbling masses of water from just a few meters away. The dull roar of the falling water pervaded the entire underground space and provided an idea of the power of the millions of litres of water that fall down the Horseshoe Falls every second.

The statistics illustrate why Niagara Falls is considered one of the natural Wonders of the World: the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the most impressive of the three falls in Niagara Falls, have a length of over 670 metres, and their height is 53 metres which makes Niagara Falls the most powerful waterfall in North America. The depth of the Niagara River below the Horsehoe Falls is estimated to be 56 metres. The straight line crest of the American Falls is 253 metres. About 90% of the water of the Niagara River plunges over the Horseshoe Falls while the other 10% make their way down the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls which are separated from the Canadian Falls by Goat Island, an uninhabited island that provides great vantage points of all the cascades.

I had now reached the outside observation platform that provides an excellent lateral view of the curtain of the Horseshoe Falls as they plunge into the river below. Tourists from all over the world were feverishly taking pictures of this unique sight. Even on this grey day the view was impressive and the thunder of the cascading masses of water filled the air as one fifth of the world's fresh water was crashing 13 stories down into the river below.

Duly impressed by this natural wonder, I made my way back up and strolled back along the Niagara River's edge to my vehicle, which I had parked conveniently at the Fallsview Casino Resort. I was pondering what to do next and because I felt thoroughly chilled I was looking for a nice place to warm up in.

I found just such a place just a few minutes drive away from the Horseshoe Falls: Bird Kingdom, one of Niagara Falls', Ontario, newer attractions. This tropical destination was surely going to revive my chilled bones and it was going to be my next stop on my Niagara Falls discoveries.

After being laid off in Silicon Valley in January 2009, I decided to go on a roadtrip across America. I bought a one-way ticket with airlines miles to Fort Myers, FL. I winded up finding this van in 3 days and started making my way up north all the way to Niagara Falls, NY through the center of America via Cleveland. I traveled leisurely and stopped in many different cities and towns. I went through hard rain, snow and sunshine and slept at rest stops, campgrounds, motels and at friends' places. The amazing journey lasted for 6 weeks! It was the BEST THING I've ever done!
